UTILIZE THE HEIGHT OF YOUR SPACE |

If you are limited in the size of your kitchen, that means that you are limited in places for storage-so why not look up! Many kitchen designs leave a space between the ceiling and/or bulkhead and the top of upper cabinetry that’s only purpose is to collect dust. Adding additional upper cabinetry, even short ones like this kitchen, can provide much needed storage options.  Whether it is for seasonal appliances, or not-so-used dishes or pantry items, installing uppers above the traditional cabinets can make sure prime space (like the lower cabinets or island ones)  are being utilized for everyday use items, while all additional items are stored not so far away.

MIX OLD AND NEW |

When a kitchen is limited in space , sometimes it can be difficult to create a design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Additionally, these kitchens can feel like they lack character, and can become very cookie-cutter.
A way to add some unique flair is to consider adding an antique item or stand alone  fixture as a focal point. Whether it is a large item , like this  beautifully restored kitchen island above, or a small item like antique light fixtures or small decor,  antique items can create a texture and pattern shift that beautiful compliments the rest of the space. Especially if your design is farmhouse or more traditional, mixing old with new can really  take the space and add a unique wow-factor.

ADD CHARACTER PIECES |

The team at Hilsden Design Co. did a wonderful job at creating a space that feels unique, even with a very traditional small kitchen layout. A big reason for this was the contrast of stark white cabinets with modern black hardware. In addition to the black hardware, they added  a matching french faucet and bistro island light fixture-two stunning character pieces.

The addition of these character pieces built on to the antique island design element to create an elegant and sophisticated finished product. Character pieces can help build any spaces design identity to whatever you would want it to be-in this case the choice of the faucet and light fixture created sophistication.
