How to Decorate your Living Room

The Focal Point: A Refurbished Island

To start, look at that island! The focal of this kitchen is undoubtedly the stunningly refurbished antique island. Originally a vintage console table, the designers loosely painted the distressed wood with a sea blue to match the backsplash tile, and added a microwave compartment on one end. The dull blue legs of the table add an interesting burst of bold colour without going overboard, while the white tabletop sticks to the minimalist design, keeping things simple and smooth.  They also removed two-thirds of the drawers to create a seating area on either side of the island, with a white quartz countertop to finish.

Four contemporary stools finish off the island, and provide a modern touch. Crafted with wood legs and a lightly padded seat, this counter-height chair is sleek-lined and simply designed. A similar stool design from Bouclair is currently available onlinehttps://www.bouclair.com/en/furniture/bar-stools/fabric-and-natural-wood-stool-9400936.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Smart%20Shopping%20-%20Furniture%20-%20EN%20%7C%20Inconclusive&utm_term=&ad_id=507786897349&ad_pos=&ad_prod_id=9400936&gclid=Cj0KCQiAjc2QBhDgARIsAMc3SqT2aLZwxwUS3X841czPkmZ-IOhxYEs8sB2LfCDFkmRCV98H4X7wI6waAv9kEALw_wcB

The countertop decor provide a burst of colour, from the bright yellow flowers to the bowl of yummy green apples. You can’t help but feel positive looking at them!

Cabinetry

Another great design feature is the combining of modern and eclectic design elements. Specifically  the cabinetry.

Nyla’s team decided to mix up the uppers, adding wood shelves on one end of the kitchen and continuing with the blue tile backsplash to create visual interest in that corner. Monochromatic kitchen items are displayed with pops of colour on the counters with a blue KitchenAid mixer.

On the opposite end of the kitchen is a more traditional upper cabinet. Two built-in stoves are integrated into the cabinetry, with the fridge and freezer, as well as the range hood being panelled with a soft wood finish. White lower cabinets complete the look with a soft wood pantry wall.

The Details

The team added an oversized matte black sink to match the charming black wall sconces above the kitchen windows. A vintage brushed gold faucet married with the gold hardware for a beautiful finishing.

For the backsplash, sea-green was used to break the monotony of the white cabinetry and complement the refurbished island. A light and fun look that is affordable and easy to install. Plus they can be wiped up easily for ultimate durability.

A long black runner runs over the natural hardwood flooring. And the sloped overhead ceilings are finished with a natural skylight, bringing in more natural light from above.

Functional & Family-Friendly Space

Overall, this is a modern and trendy kitchen, but designed while keeping in mind optimal storage, durability, seatability and design.

The island provides ample seating while the abundance of storage and cabinetry ensures minimal clutter. Seamlessly integrating each area into one another not only makes the space feel larger, but is made to impress during any occasion  from a large family dinner to a sophisticated cocktail party.
