LOVE A “FIXER UPPER”? STEP INTO ONE OF THE LATEST DESIGNED BY CHIP & JOANNA GAINES
DESIGNER HOME TOUR Ι MID-CENTURY MODERN DESIGN Ι SHOP THE LOOK
Top “fixer uppers” Chip and Joanna Gaines are household names. You can walk into any one of their homes and be left breathless. Their designs can be categorized as transitional farmhouse (not surprising, given their Waco, TX roots), with lots of exposed wood, classic furniture and modern accessories. They now have their own line of household products, ranging from furniture, decor, botanicals and even clothing.
This couple really know what they they are doing, and that has catapulted them into one of the most well-known home design teams in the world.
Enter this stunner. Showcased in the first episode of their HGTV show, “Fixer Upper, Welcome Home.”, the Gaines renovated a 2,400 square foot abandoned home for a newlywed couple named Lucas and Lacey.
The couple wanted a mid-century modern aesthetic and they were not afraid of patterns or colours. The Gaines did a great job at fulfilling the wish list, but in a way that did not feel overwhelming or easily obsolete.
FOYER
The foyer introduces the home in a dramatic fashion. Black panelled walls, matched to the sleek front-door hardware and accent table, are contrasted by the light wood flooring and door.
The table is accessorized with a few pieces from the Magnolia collection, including the gold tray (and candles on top), books, and the stunning faux dried botanicals.
HOME OFFICE
Next, the home office, where a sleek black transom window is shared with the kitchen. In here, the Gaines played up the patterns. From the deep red Persian-inspired rug, buttoned chairs, black marble-topped desk and colourful artwork.
On the bookshelf, pieces ranging in shape and size can be seen (the majority from the Gaines’ Magnolia collection).
LIVING ROOM
The living room includes a new wood oak beam, with a black and gold light fixture hanging from under.
The fireplace has been resurfaced with dark plaster. Clearly the focal point of the space, the Gaines’ did a great job with the design of the fireplace, adding a beautiful art piece and custom firewood storage below.
A white sofa and mustard chairs, are based with another rug from the Magnolia collection. The coffee table is one of my favourite pieces in this space, with exposed shelving and fun accessories finishing the room off.

KITCHEN
The kitchen is every bit the transitional farmhouse look. Modern designs, from the sleek green cabinets, stark white waterfall counters, black hood range and gold swan faucet marry with the wood panelled ceiling, exposed wood shelving, and traditional breakfast nook.
We have curated a second design board, inspired by the kitchen/breakfast nook, below. Don’t forget to shop the looks, with our custom shopping list:
PRIMARY SUITE
The primary ensuite is continuing the aesthetic of the kitchen, with green walls similar to the kitchen cabinets. A pebble soaker tub sits between two separate vanities, continuing the kitchen’s wood cabinet/white counter look.
